![]() The issue with Interscope, we actually had a very amicable split, which was not something you hear about all the time. It’s interesting that with your success, you were dropped by both Interscope and a manager. I guess it’s always darkest before the dawn. It’s kind of like the transformation I made after hitting rock bottom, going through all these emotions and then coming out the other side feeling stronger than ever, which is where I’m at now. Yeah, a good portion of that time over the past six years, I was, like, “What’s the point?” I wasn’t feeling inspired I was feeling really discouraged about my career, and simultaneously as that stuff was going on, I got dropped from Interscope, and I had a manager that dropped me as well, so I kind of hit rock bottom last year.īut once you hit rock bottom, there’s only one place to go - up.Įxactly. When you’re forced to sell your catalog, it almost feels like the music is taken away from you did that change your relationship with music at any point? I feel like that song, I found a vibe that I was really wanting to nail, and then I built from there. That was written in either the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021, and that began the process. The first song I wrote on the album was “Partly Cloudy With a Chance of Tears.” And I wrote it about that feeling of I’m putting on this facade, like this fake smile, because I can’t tell the world what I’m going through, so I’m pretending everything’s all good, but I’m on the verge of tears all the time. Was there one song early on that started this album? So this album, I feel like reflects those emotions and the things that I was going through. And it was hard, it was a lot of turmoil, depression, I was going through a lot of shit. The whole album is a cathartic release for me, it’s expressing a lot of emotions I felt over however many years it’s been. Luckily, I had the option of doing something like that, otherwise I may not have gotten out of the case.Īfter going through all of that, how much of this album was a catharsis for you? It’s like your life’s work, and then suddenly it’s like, “Okay, I’ve got to give the majority of this away.” But that was my only option. But unfortunately, the majority of what I got paid for my catalog went to taxes and my ex-husband. Every time one of those songs get used in a movie or whatever, I don’t see any of that money anymore. They’re still near and dear to my heart and yeah, I will always treasure them, but it’s different now. Have your feelings towards the songs changed at all after having had to sell them? ![]() Now I’m just focused on creating a new catalog and new money and new opportunities. But, I have such a weight off of me now with the case being over, I’m not on the phone with lawyers every day, and I’m not having to pay all these legal bills anymore. I wanted to keep building it and growing it. So this wasn’t like what Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen did when they sold their recorded and publishing rights for hundreds of millions of dollars? I didn’t want to sell them, but it was my only way to put the past behind me… But at the same time, nobody can tell me I didn’t write those songs just ’cause I don’t own the rights to them anymore. This past year, 2021, we finally resolved it, settled, I had to sell my catalog in order to afford the settlement, which was very sad in a way, because those songs like “Love The Way You Lie” and “Coming Home,” those are my babies. But since 2017 I was going through a divorce and lawsuit, that was just wrecking me emotionally and financially. I wasn’t really allowed to talk about everything that was going on because I was in a legal dispute, so I didn’t want any of that to bite me in the ass by saying something. According to Maffetone if you do all your heart-rate training runs at this rate you will be able to develop your maximum aerobic fitness (MAF) without overtraining. I have also recommended the low heart-rate training to some beginner runners that I coach so that they could develop their aerobic fitness without over-training. He was training with a group and he maintained a better level of performance over the season than the rest of the team, most of which were younger than him. One triathlete I recommended the training to was very pleased with the results. They have all had good results and after the initial slowing down to adjust to the new low heart rate they were gradually able to increase their training speed back to their normal level or even faster while maintaining their new low heart rate. Maffetone found that most of his top triathletes were able to gradually increase their speed each month until they could get close to their race speed while still maintaining their low heart rate.Īs a running coach I have encouraged some of the runners I coach to try the low heart-rate training. This also meant I didn't feel so tired during the day and didn't get so many colds etc.ĭoes Low Heart-Rate Training Really Work? Gradually each month I was able to run for longer and to keep my new low heart rate. Whereas my heart rate had been around 180 at this training speed it was now 120 for short runs. Each month I got faster and after 3 months I was able to run at my normal training pace. My pace was very slow but my heart rate seemed to reset itself at this new lower heart rate after a while. But with persistent effort, after about a month, I was able to run more consistently at the low heart rate. This continued for a couple of weeks of walk/run and was quite frustrating. I needed to be really self-disciplined at this point and I decided not to give up and to plough on regardless. I was only able to run for a short distance before my heart rate would jump up to around 180. I had been warned that you need a lot of patience at first and this was indeed the case. So I tried to train at this new low heart rate. Also there was a further modification: if you get more than two colds a year (showing your immune system was under stress) you should take off another 5 so that made 120. I was 55 at the time so it was 180 - 55 = 125. ![]() You do all your training runs at this heart rate. The formula Maffetone came up with was 180 minus your age. Some people like to use a Barbell, some people like to use a dumbbell. In terms of the chest, I feel it helps expand the chest and helps the lower part of the pecs. I feel like my upper lats have improved and gotten stronger, and after a few months I can definitely see/feel an improvement in my serratus muscle too. I like to do this exercise at the end of my chest workout, just before starting the back portion, as it uses both chest and back, and helps pre-exhaust your lats before your back workout. Currently I'm running Arnolds 2-a-day split program, which incorporates this style of work-out. Reasons I like this exercise: This exercise is great if you enjoy working the Chest and Back in the same day. On the concentric part of the movement, squeeze your lats and keep your arms slightly bent.įor better chest activation control the dumbbell all the way over your stomach finishing above your belly button, whilst squeezing the chest.Īs you don't want to be using to much weight with this exercise, I'd also recommend a fairly high rep range, somewhere from 10-12 but even going up to 15 is ok. As mentioned above, this exercise can be painful on your shoulders, and is also about controlling the weight and stretching out the back/abs and serratus muscles. For relativity my working weight for bench is around 180 lbs 4x8. For this exercise I use a 45 lb Dumbbell for 4x12 working reps. This exercise can be hard on your shoulders if you have shoulder problems, or do the movement without the utmost control. Lower the weight slowly on the eccentric part of the movement. This means your upper back/shoulders are forced to stay glued to the bench, meaning less movements, which promotes more lat and serratus activation. This means your shoulders have more room to move, which means you can lower the Dumbbell further down, creating more of a stretch throughout the movement, and really use those lats and helps develop the serratus muscle.Įnsure you are actively flexing your lower abdominal muscles and trying to push your but into the bench. Unlike traditional chest exercises like the Bench Press, I like to have the back of my head slightly off the bench. With a lot of lousy content on this site, rather than complaining, I thought I'd help generate some, so I thought I'd make a little thread on them, why I like them, a few tips and pointers to try and get the most out of them, and where not to go wrong with them, as they aren't your most traditional exercise.Ī lot of people advocate having your body perpendicular to the bench, but I feel this doesn't give your back, shoulders and legs enough stability to ensure you move the weight with good control. Recently I've been incorporating them a lot into my routine, and I'm really loving the results. New favorite exercise = Dumbbell Pullovers!
